What Tire Wear Patterns Are Telling You

Tires are one of the most important parts of your vehicle, and the way they wear down can tell you a lot about your car’s health. At our shop, we see all types of tire wear every day, and catching these patterns early can save you money and keep you safe on the road.

Common Types of Tire Wear

  • Center Wear: If you notice the tread is worn down more in the center than on the edges, your tires are likely overinflated. Too much air pressure makes the middle of the tire contact the road more, causing it to wear faster. The fix is simple: check your owner’s manual for the recommended PSI and adjust as needed.
  • Edge Wear: Are both edges of your tires looking bald while the center still has tread? That means your tires are underinflated. Not enough air causes the edges to press harder against the road. Regularly checking and maintaining the right tire pressure helps avoid this problem.
  • One-Sided Wear: If only one side of your tire is worn down, it could be an alignment issue. When your wheels are out of alignment, your vehicle pulls to one side and the tires don’t make even contact with the road. This isn’t just bad for your tires—it can hurt your steering and suspension, too.
  • Cupping or Scalloping: If your tires have a wavy, uneven wear pattern, this is called cupping or scalloping. It often means something is up with your suspension or that your tires are out of balance. You might also notice your car shaking or vibrating at certain speeds.
  • Feathering: Feathered tread means the tread ribs have a smooth edge on one side and a sharp edge on the other. This comes from misalignment, especially toe misalignment. If you run your hand over the tread and feel a difference, it is time to get your alignment checked.

Why Tire Rotation Matters

Rotating your tires every 5,000 to 7,000 miles helps them wear more evenly and last longer. Since each tire handles different loads and positions on your vehicle, swapping their positions keeps the tread wearing at the same rate. Regular tire rotation is a service that can save you money over time.

When to See a Professional

If you spot unusual tire wear, don’t wait. Bring your car in for a checkup. A professional inspection can catch issues with alignment, suspension, or tire pressure before they become bigger problems. Our ASE-certified technicians can help you understand what’s happening and fix it right.
