As someone who works on cars every day, I see firsthand the hidden toll extreme heat can take—even if your car never actually breaks down.
High temperatures can be just as hard on car batteries as freezing cold. Heat speeds up the chemical reactions inside a battery, which can cause it to wear out faster. You might not notice a problem right away, but you could be left with a weak battery that struggles to start your car on a cooler fall morning.
Your engine’s cooling system works overtime in the summer. If it is not up to the job, your engine can quickly overheat. Old coolant, clogged hoses, or a worn-out radiator cap may not be obvious until you are stuck on the side of the road.
Rubber belts and hoses are especially vulnerable to heat. Over time, heat can dry them out and cause cracks or bulges. If a belt snaps or a hose bursts, it can lead to much bigger (and more expensive) problems.
Hot pavement and under-inflated tires are a bad mix. Heat causes the air inside your tires to expand, which can lead to over-inflation, blowouts, or uneven wear. Tires that look fine at the start of summer might be worn thin by the end.
Your A/C works its hardest in peak summer. Over time, parts can wear out or refrigerant can leak, leaving your system blowing warmer air—or none at all—just when you need it most.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Slow or hesitant starting, especially in the morning
- Sweet or sharp smells around the hood (could be coolant leaks)
- Fluctuating engine temperature gauge or warning lights
- Cracks or shiny spots on belts and hoses
- Unusual tire wear, bulges, or visible cracks
- Air conditioning that isn’t as cold as it used to be
Even if your car made it through the hottest days without trouble, the wear and tear can cause problems down the road. Getting your vehicle checked in late summer is a smart move because you can catch small issues before fall and winter weather make them worse.
