But before you start planning your tailgate or painting your face, make sure your vehicle is ready for those extra highway miles and busy game-day traffic.
Game days mean extra demands on your car or truck. From long stretches of highway driving and stop-and-go traffic around stadiums, to late-night trips back home, your vehicle will be working harder than usual. Add a full load of passengers, extra gear, and all that idling in traffic, and you have a recipe for wear and tear if your car isn’t properly maintained.
Here are some key things to check before you hit the road this football season:
- Oil Level and Condition: With longer drives and more hours on the engine, fresh oil is a must. Check your oil level and look for any signs that it’s dirty or low. If you are due (or almost due) for an oil change, take care of it before your trip. This keeps your engine running smoothly and helps prevent breakdowns.
- Tires and Tire Pressure: Highway miles and packed vehicles put a lot of stress on your tires. Make sure your tires have enough tread and are inflated to the recommended pressure. Don’t forget to inspect for any damage or uneven wear. Proper tire care is also key for safe handling, especially in wet weather.
- Brakes: You never know when you’ll hit sudden stops in game-day traffic. If you hear squeaking or feel vibrations when you brake, it’s time for a brake check. Good brakes mean better safety for you and your passengers.
- Battery Health: Between extra stops, short trips, and using accessories like radios and chargers, your battery can take a beating. If your battery is more than three years old or has been acting up, get it tested before you leave.
- Coolant and Engine Fluids: Long drives in southern heat can be tough on your engine. Check your coolant level and top it off if necessary. Also, take a look at your transmission fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid.
- Lights and Wiper Blades: Late-night drives require good visibility. Test all your headlights, brake lights, and turn signals to make sure they are working. Replace any bulbs if needed. Check your wiper blades and washer fluid so you’re prepared for any pop-up showers.
- Spare Tire or Repair Kit: Don’t forget the spare. Make sure your spare tire is properly inflated and that you have all the tools you need to change a flat. If your vehicle uses a tire repair kit, check that everything is there and in working order.
