Essential Car Maintenance Tips to Stay Safe During Rainy Weather

Rainy days can sneak up on us, and when they do, the roads become a whole lot more challenging. Wet pavement means longer stopping distances and less control. That is why it is so important to make sure your vehicle is ready for the rainy season. At our shop, we see firsthand how proper maintenance can keep you safe and comfortable, no matter what the weather brings.

Tires are your first line of defense when it comes to wet roads. If your tread is worn down, your car has a harder time gripping the pavement, which can lead to hydroplaning. Here is what you should do:

  • Check your tire tread depth. If it is less than 2/32 of an inch, it is time for new tires.
  • Look for uneven wear, which could mean you need a tire rotation or alignment.
  • Make sure your tires are inflated to the recommended pressure. Under-inflated tires do not perform well in the rain.

If you are not sure about your tires, bring your vehicle by and we will inspect them for you.

Brakes have to work harder in the rain. Water can reduce their effectiveness, especially if your brake pads are worn out. Here are a few signs you may need a brake inspection:

  • Squeaking, grinding, or vibration when you stop
  • A longer distance to come to a complete stop
  • A spongy feeling when you press the brake pedal

If you notice any of these issues, it’s a good idea to have your brakes checked out as soon as possible.

Being able to see clearly is critical during heavy rain. Make sure your windshield wipers do not leave streaks or miss spots. If they do, replace them right away. Wiper blades should be changed at least once a year, or sooner if they are not working properly. Do a quick walk-around to check all your exterior lights. Headlights, brake lights, and turn signals help you see and be seen. Clean any foggy or dirty light covers and replace any burnt-out bulbs.

Taking care of these simple checks can make a big difference when you are driving in wet weather. Our ASE-certified technicians are always here to help with tire checks, brake inspections, wiper replacements, and lighting repairs. We welcome any questions you have about your vehicle’s safety.
