If you have been driving around after a Mississippi winter, you know our roads can get rough. Potholes pop up everywhere, and hitting one can do more than just give you a jolt. As a service tech who sees a lot of pothole damage, I want to help you spot problems early before they get worse.
Common Signs Your Suspension Took a Hit:
- Uneven Tire Wear Take a close look at your tires. If you notice bald spots or that one edge is wearing down faster than the rest, your alignment might be off. Potholes can knock your wheels out of alignment in a hurry, and that means your tires wear out faster and your car won’t handle quite right.
- Strange Noises After hitting a pothole, listen for new clunks, squeaks, or rattles—especially when you go over bumps or turn. These sounds can mean a damaged shock, strut, or other suspension part.
- Steering Pulls to One Side Does your car want to drift left or right when your hands are off the wheel? This is a classic sign of alignment trouble, which often comes from a hard pothole hit. It makes driving less safe and can cause steering problems if not fixed.
- Rougher Ride If your ride suddenly feels bumpier than usual, your shocks or struts might be damaged. They are supposed to smooth out the bumps, so if every crack in the road feels worse, get them checked out.
- Visible Damage Underneath Take a peek under your vehicle if you can do it safely. Look for leaking fluid near the wheels, bent suspension parts, or anything that just looks out of place. Even if you are not sure what you are seeing, any new damage is worth having a pro inspect.
