Whether you’ve got a new teen driver heading to high school or a college student cruising across the state, one thing’s for sure: their car better be ready. A little prep now can prevent major headaches (and late-night phone calls) later.
Here’s a checklist to help make sure your student’s ride is in top shape for the school year:
1. Check the Oil and Fluids: Ensure the oil has been changed recently and that all other fluids—coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid—are topped off and clean. These fluids keep the car running smoothly and prevent breakdowns.
2. Test the Battery: Hot summers followed by cooler fall mornings can be tough on older batteries. If your student’s battery is more than 3 years old, get it tested to avoid getting stranded in a school parking lot.
3. Inspect the Tires: Check tread depth, look for signs of uneven wear, and make sure the tires are properly inflated. Good tires aren’t just about safety—they also help with gas mileage and overall performance.
4. Check the Brakes: Brakes should feel firm, not squishy, and shouldn’t squeak or grind. A quick brake check can spot worn pads or other issues before they become a big problem.
5. Test All Lights: From headlights to brake lights to turn signals, make sure everything lights up as it should. Not only is it important for visibility, but it can also help your student avoid a ticket.
6. Make Sure the AC Works: It’s still summer in Mississippi, which means it’s hot. A working air conditioner can make those commutes and after-school drives way more comfortable.
7. Stock the Essentials: Make sure their car is packed with:
- Phone charger
- Jumper cables
- Flashlight
- Tire pressure gauge
- First aid kit
- Bottled water and snacks
- Insurance and registration info
8. Don’t Skip Regular Maintenance: Even if everything seems fine, regular checkups go a long way. Schedule an oil change or inspection just to make sure there aren’t any hidden issues.
