When we think of summer car care, we usually focus on tires, batteries, or keeping the AC cold. But here’s something that deserves just as much attention: your brakes. Yep, your brake system works harder when temps climb—especially during stop-and-go summer traffic, road trips, and hilly drives.
If your brakes are already worn or your fluid is low, heat can push them to the breaking point. Here’s what to watch for and how to keep your braking system in peak shape all summer long.
1. Squeaking, Grinding, or Shaking? Don’t Ignore It: Unusual noises when you brake are your car’s way of saying, “Hey, something’s wrong.” Squeaking might mean worn pads. Grinding? That could be metal-on-metal—a sign you’ve waited too long. And if your steering wheel shakes when braking, it might be a warped rotor.
2. Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal: If your brake pedal feels softer than usual or sinks closer to the floor when pressed, that could be a sign of air in the brake lines or low fluid levels. Either way, it’s a sign to get things checked before hitting the road.
3. Brake Fade on Long Drives: Heading to the mountains or just dealing with a lot of traffic? Repeated braking in high heat can cause what’s called brake fade—when the brakes lose power and feel less responsive. If you notice this, it’s time to take a break (no pun intended) and let your brakes cool off.
4. Low or Dirty Brake Fluid: Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and in the summer heat, it can boil and reduce your stopping power. If it’s been more than a couple of years since you had it changed, you’re probably due.
5. Trust the Professionals: Your brakes are your car’s most important safety system. If anything feels off, it’s worth a professional inspection. Our ASE-certified technicians can check your pads, rotors, fluid, and more to make sure everything’s ready for the road ahead.
