The holidays are a time for family, fun, and hitting the road to visit loved ones. Before you start your journey, it’s important to make sure your vehicle is ready for the extra miles and the unpredictable winter weather. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping you safe and helping your trip go smoothly.
Winter Road Trip Inspection Checklist
Tires: Check your tire tread depth and make sure the tires are inflated to the correct pressure. Bald or underinflated tires can be dangerous, especially in wet or icy conditions. If your tires are showing signs of wear or damage, it might be time for a replacement or at least a rotation.
Brakes: Your brakes are one of the most important safety features on your vehicle. Listen for unusual noises like squeaking or grinding, and make sure your brake pads still have plenty of life left. Stopping safely is even more important when roads are slick.
Wipers: Good visibility is crucial during winter travel. Replace worn or streaking wiper blades and top off your washer fluid with one that won’t freeze in cold temperatures. If your windshield is dirty or hard to see through, take care of it before you leave.
Battery: Cold weather can be tough on car batteries. If your vehicle struggles to start or your battery is more than three years old, stop by for a quick battery test. It’s better to find out now than be stranded with a dead battery miles from home.
Heater and Defroster: A working heater and defroster keep you comfortable and your windows clear. If your car isn’t warming up or the defroster isn’t working right, have it checked out.
Emergency Kit: Pack an emergency kit with essentials like a flashlight, jumper cables, blankets, bottled water, snacks, and a basic tool kit. You never know when you might need them, especially on long trips in cold weather.
Tips for Avoiding Traffic and Handling Winter Weather
Plan your route in advance and try to travel during off-peak times to avoid heavy holiday traffic. Check the weather forecast before you hit the road and be flexible with your plans if bad weather is expected.
Drive slower in wet or icy conditions and leave extra space between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Remember, bridges and overpasses freeze first. If you do hit a patch of ice, don’t slam on the brakes. Ease off the gas and steer gently.
