June marks the beginning of hurricane season here in Mississippi, and while most of us think about stocking up on bottled water and flashlights, it’s just as important to get your car storm-ready. Whether you’re evacuating or just need to be ready for heavy rain and power outages, a little preparation goes a long way.
Here’s how to make sure your vehicle is ready to weather the storm:
1. Fill the Tank and Charge Your Battery: Gas stations can run out of fuel fast before a storm, and power outages can take pumps offline for days. Keep your tank at least half full throughout hurricane season. Also, make sure your car battery is healthy—if it’s been acting up or is over three years old, now’s the time for a check.
2. Check Your Tires: Good traction is key if you’re driving in wet conditions. Make sure your tires have enough tread and are properly inflated. Don’t forget about your spare, either. A flat spare won’t help in an emergency.
3. Test the Wipers and Lights: Visibility can be terrible during a storm. Make sure your windshield wipers are in good shape and that all lights—headlights, brake lights, and turn signals—are working properly.
4. Protect Against Flood Damage: Avoid parking in low-lying areas where flooding is common. If you must drive through water, do so slowly and avoid deep areas—water can damage your engine, brakes, and electrical systems.
5. Emergency Car Kit Essentials: Pack your trunk with hurricane-specific items:
- Jumper cables
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Bottled water and non-perishable snacks
- Rain poncho and dry clothes
- First aid kit
- Basic tools and duct tape
- Phone charger (preferably a car-charging one)
- Important documents in a waterproof folder
6. Plan Your Evacuation Route: If evacuation is on the table, plan your route early and share it with friends or family. Keep a printed map in your glove box in case GPS service goes down.
