Labor Day Weekend Road Trip Prep: Avoid Common Car Problems Before You Hit the Highway

Labor Day weekend is one of the best times to enjoy a final summer road trip with family or friends. Whether you’re heading to the lake, the beach, or just visiting relatives, the last thing you want is car trouble slowing you down. As a service technician, I’ve seen too many good trips get ruined by problems that could have been caught with a quick inspection before hitting the road.

Here are a few simple things you can check now to avoid spending your holiday waiting on a tow truck:

Oil Level and Condition: Low or dirty oil can lead to serious engine trouble, especially on a long drive. Make sure your oil is at the right level and looks clean. If you’re due for an oil change, get it taken care of before you travel.

Tire Health and Pressure: Worn or underinflated tires are a leading cause of blowouts and flats. Check the tread for uneven wear and make sure all tires, including your spare, are properly inflated. Replace any tire that looks worn or damaged.

Battery Strength: Hot weather and long hours on the road can push a weak battery over the edge. If your battery struggles to start your car or is more than a few years old, have it tested. It’s much easier to replace a battery at home than on the side of the interstate.

Brakes: Don’t ignore squeaking or grinding noises. If your brakes feel soft or take longer to stop, get them checked out. Good brakes are vital, especially for sudden stops on busy highways.

Coolant Level: Engines work harder in the summer heat. Check your coolant level and top it off if it’s low. Overheating on a road trip can turn a fun day into a big headache.

Wiper Blades and Washer Fluid: It’s easy to forget about your wipers until you need them. Make sure your blades are in good shape and your washer fluid is full. Clear visibility is crucial if you run into a summer rainstorm.

Lights: Walk around your vehicle and check all the lights—headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. Replace any burned-out bulbs to stay safe and legal on the road.

Spare Tire: Make sure you have a spare tire that’s fully inflated and all the tools you’ll need to change it. It only takes a few minutes to check, but it can save hours of waiting if you get a flat.

Pack These Emergency Items Before You Go:

  • Jumper cables
  • Tire inflator or sealant
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First-aid kit
  • Basic tool kit

If you’re planning to drive several hundred miles, check your owner’s manual for any scheduled maintenance that might be due. Taking care of it now means you’ll spend less time worrying and more time enjoying the trip.
